Hello;
I owned a R1100S from 2006, first I bought a 1999 model and I was happy with it, so much so I bought another 2002 model and for a while I had 2 bikes and I love those bike to say the least, I sold the 99 and change the 2002 for an airplane, 5 years later I was CRAVING R1100S I was melancholic so I got a R1100S 2004 model, servo assisted brake, ABS, 2 sparks plugs per cylinder.
The R1100S is standing in the PERFECT spot between Cruiser and Sport, and I know that because I owned a R1200S as well as the R1100S at the same time so I had the chance to compare them both, the perfect R1100S would be removing that 95hp engine and put the 1200S engine on it, the R1200S gave me pain in my wrist at low speeds (driving in city centrum) is more sporty, I had the tendency to overturn the R1200S if I driven the 1100 for awhile, I made a trip from south Sweden to North cape on the 1100S in one week and I came home with a big smile in my face and no pain in my body.-
ABS in the 1100S for whatever reason came without the reset button, so if the voltage drops by 1V, like in winter or charging the phones and running the camera at the same time, the ABS start acting very stupid, I changed the battery for a gel battery with slightly higher capacity and that somewhat solved the problem, however resetting that freaking ABS is a pain in the @$$. So forget about adding up seat heat.
The master cylinder for the clutch, originally from BMW is CRAP, start leaking inside of the "CAR" like clutch system and it begin to skid when changing gear in high RPM, I change that for 2 of the R1100S models, however if you buy same master cylinder from the company that manufactures it (MAGURA) it it will last for ever. Aparently there was a mistake on the batch Magura delivered to BMW.-
The 1100S is not a racer, it takes a bit of time to deliver the power, but it does deliver, assisted brakes with ABS is just perfect, though the braking system in the R1200S was much better, but then again there is plenty of more power to deal with.
The R1200S is the most mechanically perfect bike I ever owned, I had NO complains in the way BMW made that bike, besides the ugly front head, that bike is just Mechanically a beauty, you can change the rear tire only by removing the 5 bolts, just like a car, VERY easy to work with, light and very maneuverable; there is tons of aftermarket goodies that you can buy for next to nothing- I really don´t understand why R1200S was produced only 3 years. Without changing the seat position and the handle bar position, I would love to take the best of the R1200S and put it on the R1100S.
Adjusting the valves in a BMW is a 15 min job, i´m lighting up the R1100S right now and I have it for sale as well, because I have my eyes on the new R1250RS which it looks like a better version of the R1100S. Before the R1200RS came into the market I don´t think there was anything closer to the R1100S.
sorry for the long answer, hope it helps.
